“Who is responsible for this pregnancy?” she rhetorically asked herself. Was she impregnated by Mr. Harry or the gang rapists that raped her? She stood there mute and confused while battling with these thoughts.
Aba sat in her room very confused. She refused to talk to her roommates because she was deep in thoughts all the time. She was contemplating whether to call Mr. Harry or pay him a visit in his office to inform him about the new development. She finally considered the latter. She was going to his office that afternoon. She had called him severally but he had refused to pick her calls.
Aba dressed up and drove her Toyota Camry to Mr. Harry’s office. She knew the secretary wouldn’t allow her to enter so she barged into Mr. Harry’s office without any appointment. The secretary was running after her to stop her from entering the office but was unsuccessful. Nothing could stop Aba. Mr. Harry was surprised to see Aba in his office that afternoon. He signaled to the secretary to leave Aba alone and excuse them.
“Yes Aba, what can I do for? Mr. Harry inquired of Aba. “What I have done to you? You don’t pick my calls and you have refused to see me since my discharge from the hospital.” Aba lamented. “Oh that. I am sorry okay? I have been very busy these days.” Mr. Harry explained. “Anyway, that hasn’t answered my question. What can I do for you?” Mr. Harry asked again. “I will go straight to the point because I can see you don’t want me here. I realized some changes in my body and also my menstrual cycle. I went to perform a pregnancy test and the results stated positive.” Aba said. “So?” Mr. Harry retorted.
Aba was perplexed with the reply Mr. Harry gave. She knew Mr. Harry was trying to refuse that he is responsible for her pregnancy. “No, he can’t do that!!” Aba thought while pressing her lips together. She needed to be strong or else Mr. Harry will not accept responsibility of the pregnancy. He is the only one she knew. There was no way she was going to locate the rapists so she had to try her best to make Mr. Harry accept the pregnancy.
“Why are you asking such a question? I said I am pregnant and you are responsible for it.” Aba said firmly. “Hahahahahaha…. Hahahahahahaha….. Hahahahahahahahaha.” Mr. Harry laughed mockingly. “Do you think I was born yesterday? Who are you trying to deceive? Have you tried to inform those rapists that you are pregnant? Please get out of my office before I lose my temper.” Mr. Harry said while his mood changed from being friendly to an angry person.
Aba immediately saw Mr. Harry’s mood change. She had to get out of his office fast before he threw her out. She was very angry at the moment, but there was nothing she could do. She felt Mr. harry had betrayed the love she had for him. “Oh men!! I will never trust a man again!” Aba exclaimed while she stormed out of Mr. Harry’s office in tears. She didn’t know what to do next.
Meanwhile, examinations were just around the corner. Aba wasn’t prepared at all to write the examination. She didn’t even remember the last time she stepped into the lecture hall. She had been a dedicated student when she first came to the school, but now, she was far from that. Her new lifestyle made it impossible for her to concentrate on her academics. She had a lot of papers to resit. In particular, that semester had been tough on Aba considering she was admitted in the hospital for a full month. All these problems made her want to sink into the ground and return no more. Life had been tough on her and she didn’t have any way out.
Aba was still thinking of her next line of action. She finally decided to abort the pregnancy because that looked simpler. She didn’t want her parents to find out she was pregnant. They would be very disappointed in her when they get to know especially her father. She had heard of things ladies go through during the abortion process. She was scared, but didn’t have any other choice. She had to do what she got to do before the pregnancy become visible.
“I cannot give birth to a bastard.” Aba said with tears rolling down her check. She never imagined she would ever be in such a situation when she first steeped foot on campus. She had so strayed from her values and principles but such is life. She needed to be objective now and do what is necessary.
Because this was her first attempt on abortion, she didn’t know how to go about it. She needed to consult someone who knew more about it. She went and consulted Stella. She really needed her help to abort the pregnancy. Stella having gone through the process many times assured Aba it was a very simple thing. She told Aba she would buy some medicines for her to take. “These medicines are very potent. They will melt the fetus and it will come out as blood. Don’t worry, it will just be like a menstruation.” She assured Aba.
Stella went to the pharmacy and bought the medicines. She brought them to Aba and she took them. In thirty minutes, Aba felt a sharp pain in her abdomen. She laid on her back on the bed. She started sweating profusely because the pain had intensified. Alas, the fetus had melted and came out as blood. She told Stella about what had happened to her. “Oh that is great! That means the abortion has been successful.” Stella said.
Aba was relieved because what seemed like a mountain had been leveled. She now didn’t have to worry about all the problems the pregnancy would have brought. What still bothered her was the examinations. She needed to solve the resit problem. She can’t afford not to graduate. It was her last semester on campus and she didn’t want anything to impede her graduation. She decided to go and have a private chat with the lecturer whose paper she was resiting.
She went to see the lecturer early the next morning. She wanted to know if there were short cuts to skipping writing that paper. She knocked on the door of the lecturer’s office and entered. She sat on the chair opposite the lecturer.
Lecturer: Young lady, what can I do for you?
Aba: Sir, I failed your paper last year and have to write it again but I don’t think I can do that now because of my present circumstances.
Lecturer: So what do you want me to do? If you have failed the paper, then simply write it again.
Aba: Sir as I explained earlier, I can’t write it now. That is why I have come to see you for you to help me. Sir, I will do anything for you to help me. I want to graduate this year. Please help me.
(The lecturer stared at Aba for some time.)
Lecturer: I have heard all that you have said. Thank your stars I am in a good mood today. I will help you, but I also want you to do something for me in return.
Aba: What Sir?
What do you think the lecturer will ask of Aba?
Watch out for the next episode for what happens next.
