In Search of Treasures by Lewis Dampson Season 1- Episode (10)

Rose’s mother agreed to let Araba stay in the house. Her father couldn’t refuse her decision because of the story her wife narrated. They asked Rose where Araba was. It was there she revealed she was in the guest room.

Her parents asked her to call Araba from the guest room. Rose hurried and went to call Araba. “Araba!! Get up and follow me. My parents want to speak to you right now.” Rose said while waiting for Araba to get ready for them to leave to the hall.

“Have they accepted me to stay in this house? Or they will interrogate me and sack me from this house?” Araba rhetorically asked herself. She was relieved when she saw the countenance of Rose. She looked excited. Araba dressed up and followed Rose to the hall.

When they got to the hall, Rose’s parents were already seated waiting for them. They signaled to Araba to sit on the sofa. “What is your name, dear?” Rose’s mother asked. “My name is Araba, madam.” Araba answered. “We have heard of your ordeals daughter, and we have agreed to allow you to stay with us. We will take full responsibility of your needs and even enroll you in a school.” Rose’s father said.

“Which class are you my dear?” Rose’s mom asked. “I stopped school after my first year at Junior High School.” Araba replied. “Okay, we will enroll you in school as soon as possible so you can catch up with your peers.” Rose’s mother said.

Araba was short of words. She couldn’t believe her ears. She was amazed how circumstances had changed all of a sudden. She nearly gave herself to prostitution just that morning, but see what God was doing in her life. She shed tears of joy. The thought of going back to school really excited her. Her peers were in the senior High schools. “Life is not a race. Someone can move early in life, but will travel with a bicycle while someone may start late, but will move with an airplane. Hmm…. The race is not to the swift, nor do the battle to the strong, but time and chance happen to them all. I believe God has set this period to be my time and chance and I will walk in it. He has heard all my cries day and night and has answered my prayers. Glory be to His name!” Araba said silently as she shed those tears of joy.

Rose moved and hugged Araba. “Don’t worry Araba, you are now like a sister. I will treat you as such.” Rose said. Rose’s parents gave Araba her own room and told her to move from the guest room because she was no longer a guest.

Meanwhile, Mame Pokua was showering her daughters with love. She had managed to silence the whole family. The family members thought she had spent the money, but that wasn’t the case. She had kept the money she realized from the selling of the properties in the bank. She was waiting for her daughters to come of age to hand over the money to them.

Doreen was the oldest among Mame Pokua’s daughters. She had become insolent because of the way her mother treated her. She was just following the footsteps of her mother. She respected nobody whether young or old. She always had problems with her classmates and teachers. Doreen mostly stayed home because of frequent suspensions. Instead of her mom reprimanding her, she rather fought with the teachers for dealing harshly with her daughter.

Doreen was now in her third year and was about to write her West African Secondary School Certificate Examination. She hardly stayed in school and that made her a poor student. She was advised severally by her teachers, but just as her mother, she heeded none of them. The day of the examination was approaching, and she cared less. She was more interested in her outings than studies. She had numerous boyfriends and had little time on her hands for studies. She had to satisfy their various needs.

Finally, the day of examination came. It was then she realized she hadn’t prepared adequately for the examination. She needed to do something fast or else she would fail. She decided to sneak a foreign material into the examination hall. She hid the material in her brassiere because she knew the inspectors would be all males.

When Doreen got to the examination center, she realized the students had queued for inspection. She boldly stood in the queue. It got to her turn in three minutes. She was confident because she expected only male inspectors, but luck run out on her that day. There was a policewoman who was inspecting the girls. She didn’t see her when she joined the queue because the place was crowded. There was nothing she could do. She prayed she wouldn’t be caught.

“Raise up your hands lady!” The policewoman ordered her. She had no choice than to obey. She lifted her hands up for the policewoman to carry on with the inspection. Her heart was pounding due to fear and anxiety. The police woman searched her pockets, but found nothing. She then asked Doreen to unbutton slightly so that she could search her brassiere for foreign materials.

Doreen’s heart almost missed a beat when she heard that. Her countenance changed as she realized the policewoman was serious. She did as she was commanded, and the policewoman searched her accordingly.

Doreen was relieved when the policewoman couldn’t detect the foreign material. She had hidden it well in her brassiere. She was asked by the policewoman to enter the examination hall.
During the examination, Doreen was waiting for an opportunity to bring out the foreign material. She had written nothing on her answer sheet. Luckily for her, the answers to most of the questions were on that material.

She sat in the room close to an hour unable to execute her plan. An invigilator stood on her the whole time. This rankled her incessantly. She had wanted the invigilator to move so she could bring out the foreign material. Time was not on her side.

Finally, the invigilator moved to attend to a candidate. Doreen saw this as an opportunity and brought out the foreign material. She copied as fast as she could. She was almost done answering the questions when an invigilator shouted at her. “Hey!!! What are you doing?” The invigilator asked. Doreen got scared. Had she been caught? She immediately hid the material.

The invigilator prompted his colleagues, and they all moved to Doreen’s position. They asked her to surrender the foreign material. Doreen initially denied the allegation. She argued she wasn’t copying. This enraged the invigilators, and they searched her thoroughly. They found the foreign material in her socks. There was nothing she could do because she was caught red handed. The invigilators called for the services of the police and Doreen was apprehended. She was taken to the police station immediately.

What do you think will happen to Doreen?
