She didn’t know what to do. Rose with her melancholy had deciphered that there was something wrong between Daniel and herself. Should she tell her the truth?
Araba decided to let the cat out of the bag. Telling Rose the truth will break her heart, but just for a season. It was better than withholding the information from her, which could destroy her entire future. “Sister Rose. Something terrible happened between Daniel and myself.” Araba said. Rose immediately became interested. After all, her prediction was true. “Yes, what happened? Don’t stop, continue.” Rose said. “He came to the house to look for you, but met your absence. He opted to wait for you when I told him you have left for an impromptu meeting. I showed him a seat on the sofa and left to get him some drink. I was watching a movie while I slept. The next thing I saw was Daniel on me. He was trying to rape me. I resisted him with all my strength and hit him in the abdomen. He fell, and I fled to my room.” Araba finally told the truth.
Rose was surprised at what she heard. She had never seen Daniel behaving in an unseemly manner. To think of tagging him with lechery was out of the question. She needed Araba to prove what she said to buttress her claim. “Araba, do you have any prove to buttress your claim that Daniel tried to rape you?” Rose asked. “Yes, I have. While we were struggling, we both sustained bruises on our bodies. I can show you mine.” Araba said while revealing the marks on her hands and back.
Rose was taken aback. After all, Araba was speaking truth. She was perplexed and confused at the same time. “Why didn’t I notice this licentious behavior about Daniel? I am always good at analyzing things. Why couldn’t I do same with this one? It is true, love comes with a blindfold that makes the most obvious eludes its victim.” Said Rose.
Rose told Araba to go to her room. She tried to sleep but couldn’t. Her heart was pounding with both anger and hurt. “Daniel is ungrateful! How can he do this to me? I will call him and confront him on this issue.” Rose said while in tears.
She picked up her phone and tried to call Daniel. She was unfortunate when she heard the operator’s voice that Daniel’s phone was switched off. She became irritated the more and threw her phone away. She wept. She wept throughout the night till sleep-death’s counterfeit griped her with its mighty hand.
Rose woke up in the morning so late for work. She had no time to think about Daniel as she was supposed to give a presentation that morning. She hurriedly dressed and went to work. She really wanted to call Daniel, but time was not on her side. She decided to call him when she returned from work or perhaps pass by his place.
Meanwhile Nana Akua was on her way to Daniel’s place. She wanted to pass by his place before going to the market. At half-past eleven, she got to the gate of Daniel’s house. She rang the bell and Daniel came out to open the gate. “Hello Nana Akua, how are you doing?” Daniel inquired of Nana Akua. “I am good Sir Daniel.” Nana Akua responded.
With the exchange of those pleasantries, Daniel led the way to his hall. She offered Nana Akua a drink and tried to entertain her. “Sir Daniel, you called me yesterday and said you needed me to come over to your house today. I decided to pass by before going to the market. Why did you call for me, Sir?” Nana Akua asked as she realized she was running late.
“Oh yes, I called you over because I need you to help me with something. I have a problem and I need you to help me solve it.” Daniel said. “Really! What could that be Sir?” Nana Akua asked, confused as she didn’t know how she could help her madam’s fiancée. “Araba wants to come between Rose and me. She wants to do everything possible to stop the upcoming wedding. I can’t allow that to happen, so I will pay you a sum of three thousand Ghana Cedis to perform a simple task for me.” Said Daniel.
Nana Akua was surprised. She would be paid three thousand Ghana Cedis. That was her ten months wages. There was no way she would allow that money to pass her by. She will do whatever it takes to get the money. “What do you want me to do for you, Sir Daniel?” Nana Akua asked. “I want you to help me get rid of Araba from the house. I don’t know how you will do that, but I want you to use whatever means necessary to ensure the goal is achieved.” Daniel said while handing over a brown envelope to Nana Akua.
When Nana Akua opened the envelope, she realized it was money. She took the money out and counted it. It was exactly half the payment. She saw that Daniel serious and meant what he said earlier. She was more resolved to perform the task at hand.
Nana Akua immediately left Daniel’s house. She needed to hurry home before anyone returns to the house. She went to the market in a hurry and bought all she needed for the house. She returned to the house as soon as she was done.
Nana Akua went round the house and realized everyone had gone out including Araba. She had gone to school and would be back later in the day. She quickly went to the master bedroom. She looked through Rose’s father things and found some money in the drawer. She took the money and left the room immediately.
She went to Araba’s room, picked her bag and placed the money it. She placed the money in such a way Araba herself wouldn’t recognize that there was something inside. She left Araba’s room and went about her normal chores.
In the evening, Rose’s father wanted to take the money and deposit it in a friend’s bank account. Actually, the money was for his friend. He was supposed to wire the money to him so he could complete a transaction. He searched for the money, but couldn’t find it. He ransacked the room, but all to no avail. He was confused. The money was one hundred thousand dollars. He waited for his wife to return from work, perhaps, she had hid it somewhere for safe keeping.
His face gleamed when he heard his wife entering the compound. He left at once to meet her downstairs. “Akosua, have you seen the money I placed in the drawer yesterday?” Rose’s father asked his wife. “What sort of question is that? Weren’t you the one counting it when I left for work his morning?” Rose’s mother answered the question with another question. “Yes, I remember, but I came back this evening to take the money, but couldn’t find it. I thought you have placed it somewhere for safe keeping.” Said Rose’s father. “No, I haven’t touched the money.” Rose’s mother said with anxiety in her voice.
They both went to search for the money in their room. After thirty minutes of thorough searching, they concluded that the money wasn’t in the room. “If the money is not here, then where can it be?” Rose’s father asked while gazing at the roof as if expecting an answer. Rose’s mother left their room immediately to Nana Akua’s room. She found her asleep and woke her up as soon as she entered. She inquired about the where about of the money from her, but Nana Akua bluntly denied. Rose’s mother wasn’t convinced and ransacked her room. She didn’t find the money in Nana Akua’s room.
Rose’s mother was feeling reluctant to go to Araba’s room because she trusted her so much. She had been on her best behavior since she arrived and had no reason to suspect her. At present, there was nothing she could do than to ask her about the money. She got to Araba’s room and found her studying. She asked Araba whether she had come across some money in their bedroom. Araba responded she had seen no money. Rose’s mother had no choice than to ransack her room too. She searched Araba’s room, but couldn’t see the money. She was about to go when Nana Akua entered Araba’s room. She told Rose’s mother to search Araba’s bag well. “I heard her making a call the other day. She said over the phone that, she needed money desperately to start life on her own. She sounded so desperate over the phone. I wouldn’t be surprised if she stole the money.” Nana Akua lied.
Araba was speechless. She didn’t know what to say. She watched Rose’s mother as she tore her bag apart. Unfortunately, the money fell from the bag onto the ground. “Araba what is this!!!?” Rose’s mother asked her with shock on her face. Araba was speechless. She didn’t know what to say.
What would you have done if you were in Araba’s shoes?
