2 WEEKS LATER
The turmoil in the home of the Owusus continued, and nothing seemed to get better. They had been residents in their new vicinity for barely 6 months but most of their neighbors had gotten to know them since Mr. and Mrs. Owusu fought almost every single day.
Their children, Esi, a second year student in the university, and her brother Caleb were greatly disturbed by the turbulence in their home. There was no joy or tranquility. There was no togetherness in their home, and gradually their parents were not making time for them anymore.
Out of anger their father would come home either very late, or stay away from home for days. Their mum as well would just be by herself, and anytime Esi would want to have a girls talk with her she got the usual ‘Not now! I’m not in the mood’ from her mum.
It wasn’t surprising to Esi then when her brother got himself in trouble some weeks back. They seemed not to have anybody to talk to except their peers.
Church was a thing of the past to the Owusus since the anger and tension which was almost always with them seemed to have snuffed out every desire for church in them. Except for the church services Esi used to attend whiles in SHS, she couldn’t remember the last time she went to church, or even prayed or read her bible.
As such, Esi found solace in secular music, fashion trends, jumping from one relationship to another, parties and friends all in an effort to feel complete and find that joy and satisfaction her heart longed for.
THE CHARGE - EPISODE 6
Esi’s brother Caleb didn’t do anything different. He knew all the betting spots around, and wasted time and money on parties, girls, and friends.
Somehow, Esi could sense that there was a vacuum in her own life and in her family. It was a vacuum that nothing she had tried had been able to satisfy. Yet, since she didn’t know what it was, or even how to fill that void, she gave herself more and more to those things that gave her temporal pleasure.
But Esi had tried everything, expect God.
One day, whiles at home, on her bed, she out of boredom decided to visit the Bible app on her phone: something she hadn’t done ever since she downloaded the app.
However she was struck by what the ‘Bible verse for the day’ read. It was from John 19:30.
“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” She read it out. The scripture got her thinking deeply.
“Why would Jesus drink the sour wine? Why did he say it is finished after he received the sour wine?” she thought in bewildment as it seemed like the scripture was speaking to her.
“He received the sour wine… sour wine… sour wine… then he said it is finished… Wait!” she got up from the bed as she thought about the scripture which seemed to have become alive to her. “Jesus received the sour wine… Then he said it is finished!”
“Yes! I get it! It’s got to be so! It means that he’s already tasted the sour… so it is finished! Every sour thing like what my family and I are going through is finished! It is finished!” she screamed out loud in amazement.
THE CHARGE - EPISODE 7
A WEEK LATER. SUNDAY MORNING
“Esi, are you sure you want us to do this?” Caleb asked his sister again with an anxious look upon seeing the huge crucifix on the chapel pinnacle.
“Caleb! Aren’t you tired of all that we are going through? I'm tired! Nothing seems to get better in our home!”
“Yes Esi that’s true! Our house witches are very mean and uncouth!”
“I don’t know Kay, but it’s obvious God is missing in this whole 'Owusu family equation' ! And I don’t know how but I believe that He will be able to help us! Remember the scripture I shared with you? “It is finished.” She told her brother convincingly.
Esi had started to get the conviction that they needed God’s help. She encouraged her brother to join her visit a local church she had identified in their vicinity.
“But we could have just stayed at home to listen to sermons on TV o! Look at all these people who are going to this church! Obviously we’d get lost in it!” Caleb expressed.
“Hmm! Caleb I really don’t know, okay? But I just feel like we should have a family of God. At least, I believe there is unity and love and care in God’s house. We aren’t finding it at home, but I have a feeling that we will find that in church!"
"Hmm! You're right Esi! Looking at the fire the witches have set in our home, I'm sure we need spiritual fire fighters! "
" Caleb don't worry! I'm sure God will help us! Honestly I've not known how to even pray concerning all that's happening in our family.... The best I've been able to do is get depressed and then cry, but know that God has got some mercy for us...And I'm sure the church will be more than willing to bear us up in prayer, so mum and dad's marriage gets better again! C’mon let’s go!”
With that Esi was able to convince her brother. Due to Caleb’s earlier reluctance, the service started before they got there.
As they got ushered into the huge chapel auditorium, Esi realized that people stared at her queerly.
“Maybe they’re seeing us here for the first time, that’s why.” She thought to herself.
