Juggled Glory (The Story of Aba) by Lewis Dampson

Season  1-  Episode  (8)

She  wanted  to  scream  for  help,  but  her  lungs were  immediately  filled  with  water.  She  was choking,  shrieking  and  struggling. Aba  was  dying.

When Aba thought  all  hope  was  lost,  she  felt  an  arm  hold  her  and  lifted  her  onto  the  surface. She  was  dragged out  of  the  pool.  She  was  resuscitated  by  her  rescuer. Within  some  few minutes  she  was  well  and  could  speak.

“Lady,  I  am  very sorry  for  startling  you.  Please  forgive me.”  Her  rescuer  said  with  an  apologetic  gesture. Aba  didn’t  know whether  to  be  angry  or  to  be  thankful  to  the  man. He  almost  caused  her  to lose  her  life,  but  he  rescued  her.  With  a  confused  face,  she  accepted  the  man’s  apology. It  was then  she  took  a  real  look  at  him. He  was  in  his  mid-forties  and  sounded  gentlemanly. They  soon  got  themselves  acquainted  and  exchanged  their  phone  numbers.  Aba  got  to  know the  man as  Mr.  Harry.

Mr.  Harry  suggested  he  takes  Aba  to  the  hospital  so  they  could  run checks  on  her.  Aba  agreed  and  they  left  immediately.   Upon  arrival  at  the  hospital,  the  doctor  examined  her  and  the  results  confirmed  she  was  in good  health  except  that,  she  was  in  shock. There  was  no  cause  for  alarm.  Mr.  Harry  drove  Aba straight  to  campus  and  promised  to  come  and  check  up  on  her  early  the  next  day.   Aba  recollected  what  happened  to  her  at  the  party.  The  thought  that  she  almost  lost  her  life scared  her. She  was  just  close  to  dying  just  some  few hours  ago.  She  became  weary and  slept off.

Mr.  Harry  came  early  the  next  morning  as  promised. She  bought  Aba  breakfast  from  an expensive  restaurant. He  knocked  on  Aba’s  door.  Stella  opened  the  door  and  was  surprised  to see  Mr.  Harry. She  recognized  him  from  the  party  she  attended  last  night  and  was  wondering what  he  was  doing  at  her  door  that  morning.  “Hello  lady.  I  am  after  Aba.  Can  you  please  call  her for  me?”  Mr.  Harry  requested.  Stella  was  in  shock  to  learn  that  the  man  she  saw  at  the  party was  after  Aba.  She  closed  the  door  and  went  to  wake  Aba  up.  “Aba  wake  up!!  You  have  a visitor. Stella  said  while  vigorously  shaking  Aba  on  her  bed  to  wake  her  up  from  her  slumber. When Aba realized  it  was  Mr.  Harry  at  the  door,  she  quickly  got  off  the  bed  and  freshened  up  a little.  She  went  to  the  door  and  invited  him  in.  “Oh  Aba,  I  am  sorry.  I can’t  come  in  because  I  am late  to  work. I  will  pass  by another  time  and  we  can  sit  down  and  talk.”  Mr.  Harry  said  while  he handed  the  breakfast  to  Aba.  He  dipped  his  hands  into  his  pocket and  gave  Aba  two  hundred Ghana  cedis.  He  promised  to  add  more. Aba  initially  rejected  the  money,  but  accepted  it  later  on  persuasion.  She  didn’t  want  Mr.  Harry to  think  of  her  as  the  money  conscious  type.

“This  man  is  generous  Aba,”  said  Stella  when  Aba  returned  to  the  room.  “I have  been  searching for  these  kind  of  men,  but  had  since  not  been  successful. You  are  a  lucky girl  Aba.  I  envy  you.” Stella  added.

They  all  left  to  lectures  leaving  Erica  alone  in  the  room. She  had  a  free  day  and decided  to  stay indoors. Erica  was  in  the  room  alone  when  a  group  of gentlemen  knocked  on the  door.  She  went  to open  the  door  and  realized  they  were  doing  evangelism.  They  were  going  into  rooms  sharing the  Word  of  God. They  requested  few minutes  of Erica’s  time  to  share  the  word  of  God  with  her which  she  gladly  accepted. After  all,  it  was  normal  on  campus  and  she  had  had  many students coming  into  the  room  to  do  evangelism.

“Hello  lady,  can  I  please  know your  name?”  Asked  Bro. Kennedy  the  leader  of the  evangelism team.  “I  am  Erica,”  she  answered.  “Can  I  please  share  a  story with  you?  I  think  this  story may interest  you.”  Bro. Kennedy requested.  “You  can.  In  fact,  I  like  stories.”  Erica  retorted.  “Okay, that  is  very  nice.  My story is  about  a  Juggler.”  Said  Bro. Kennedy.  “Let  me  hear  it  please!!  Erica answered  in  a  haste  because  she  was  fond  of  stories.

“This  story is  a  true  story  dated  in  1874. There  lived  a  poor  man  who  lived  in  a  small  village  in France. He  tried  as  much  as  possible  to  fend  for  his  family  but  couldn’t. The  more  he  struggled, the  more  hardship  he  faced. He  finally  traveled  to  the  capital  city  of  England. He  was  sure  he would  overcome  poverty by going  to  England  because  he  had  heard  of  the  industrialization taking  place  there.   He  bought  himself  a  ticket  and  travelled  to  England.

He  was  not  skillful  so  he  couldn’t  work  in any of  the  industries.  The  only  opportunity  available  to  him  was  to  be  a  Juggler. He  juggled  in England  for  thirty years  and  accumulated  a  lot  of  money.  He  one  day  thought  to  himself  to  go back  home to his  family.  The  money  he  had  accumulated  would  make  him  a  rich  man  back home.

He  bought  a  ship  ticket  to  travel  back  home.   Because  the  two  countries  didn’t  have  a  common  currency, he  bought  diamonds  with  his money. Diamonds  had  the  same  value  in  his  country.  He  could  sell  the  diamonds  and  recover  all his  money  when  he  got  back  home.

He  entered  the  ship  with  his  huge  diamond  along  with  his luggage. He  was  asleep  in  one  of  the  rooms  in  the  ship  when  he  heard  a  noise  coming  from  another  area on  the  ship.  It  was  like  people  were  cheering  and  clapping.  The  noise  was  so  loud  that  he couldn’t  sleep. He  then  went  and  checked  where  the  noise  was  coming  from  and  the  reason  for the  noise. When he got to  the  source  of  the  noise,  he  realized  it  was  a  juggling  show. A  young  guy  was juggling  with  four  bottles  and  was  receiving  a  lot  of  praise  from  his  audience.  The  people  were cheering  this  young  guy  to  an  extent  that  the  man  became  jealous.  He  challenged  the  young guy and  stole  all  the  praise  for  himself.

He  got  himself  eight  bottles  and  juggled  with  them.  Soon all  eyes  were  on him.  All  the  people left  the  young  guy and  were  now cheering  him.  He  became  very  happy and  juggled  the  more. To  further  prove  how good  he  was,  he  dipped  his  hand  into  his  wallet  and  brought  out  his diamond. He  challenged  the  people  he  could  add  the  huge  diamond  to  the  bottles  and  juggle  all of  them  together.  The  people  were  amazed  when  they  saw  the  man  juggling  with  his  diamond and  all  the  eight  bottles.

They  cheered  him  more  and  more  expressing  their  amazement. In  the  process  of  juggling,  there  was  a  little  turbulence  and  all  the  bottles  with  the  diamond  fell. His  precious  diamond  fell  and  was  sliding  into  the  water. He  chased  the  diamond,  but  to  no avail. The  diamond  fell  into  the  ocean. He  watched  the  diamond  disappear  as  it  sank  deeper and  deeper  into  the  water.  He  cried and  cried,  but  that  couldn’t  solve  his  problem.  He  returned home  empty  handed.”

Bro. Kennedy  ended  his  story. Erica  was  so  moved  by the  story, she  thought  to  herself  how foolish  the  man  had  been  by juggling  with  his  diamond.  Bro. Kennedy further  explained  to  her  that  she  may  think  the  man was  foolish  to  act  in  such  a  manner,  but  most  people  are  doing  the  same  thing  with  their  lives. He  explained  to  Erica  that  most  people  juggle  with  their  lives  when  given  the  least  opportunity. They  mostly  do  that  to  please  other  people.  They  hardly  do  things  to  please  their  heavenly Father.  He  added  that  people  juggle  with  their  lives  by living  their  lives  without  Jesus  and  later die  and  find  themselves  in  hell.

Erica  heart  was  touched  by Bro. Kennedy’s  words. She  gave  her  life  to  Christ  when  Bro. Ken made  an  altar  call.  Erica  was  now a  changed  person. She  didn’t  want  to  juggle  with  her  life anymore.  She  decided  then  to  take  her  Christianity serious  and  be  regular  at  church. Bro.  Kennedy  invited  her  to  church  which  she  gladly  accepted.  She  wanted  to  learn  more  about her  new faith.

She  went  to  the  church  that  evening  to  fellowship. Erica  enjoyed  the  service  very much.  She  never  knew joy could  be  found in  the  house  of  God. She  was  getting  to  know  other  people  when  she  saw  a  face  that  looked  familiar.  She  wasn’t sure  at  first,  but  upon  getting  closer,  she  was  now  certain  she  knew  the  person. She  was surprised  as  she  never  tagged  the  fellow to  be  that  spiritual. “Hey  Bernard!  Do  you  attend  this  church  too?”  Erica  asked.  “Yes,  Erica,  I  am  a  staunch  Christian and  this  is  where  I  fellowship.”   This  meeting  created  a  new kind  of  friendship  between  Bernard  and  Erica.  They  weren’t  now just  distant  friends  but  had  become  very close  since  they  fellowship  together  in  the  same church.

Is  there  going  to  more  than  friendship  between  Erica  and  Bernard? What  of  Aba? Is she  going  to end  up in  a  relationship  with  Mr.  Harry  because  of  his  generosity? Had  Aba  learnt  from  her previous  mistake?

  To  be  continued….
