Araba tapped Rose on the shoulder. “Sister Rose are you okay?” Araba asked. “Yes dear, I am okay. I was thinking about what you said and I think you are right. I will observe Daniel very well in these last moments before I finally step with him to the altar. But, I will need your help. I can’t do this on my own. I need you to help me study him intensely in these few days.” Rose said as she continued to sit quietly on the Sofa. She was thinking of how to start with her investigations.
The family of Mame Pokua was waiting for both daughter and mother to recover and regain their consciousness. They had all slept at the hospital the previous night. They were all startled when one nurse stormed past them to the doctor’s office. She barged into the office and realized the doctor wasn’t there. He went home the previous night and hadn’t returned. “Call the doctor!!! Tell him there is an emergency and we require his presence right now.” Said another nurse to her colleague as she also barged into the office. “I called him and he says he is on his way. Hurry!! Let us try our best to help the situation.” Said another nurse as they hurried back into the intensive care unit.
The family members of Mame Pokua were confused. They were wondering why there was a commotion at the hospital early that morning. They saw them rushing into the intensive care unit and were scared. “Get up Doris!!! I think there is something wrong.” Mame Pokua’s husband woke up one of his daughters who was still sleeping. Doris lazily took off the blanket that was covering her and rubbed her eyes. She was oblivious to what was happening. “Papa, what is wrong?” She asked as she yawned. “I think there is something wrong in the intensive care unit. The nurses are just rushing in. One just came out to make a call and rushed back inside. As far as I can remember, it is only your mother and sister who are in that room.” Mame Pokua’s husband said with fear and anguish in his voice.
One of the nurse’s was walking past them when Mame Pokua’s husband approached her. “Please nurse, what is going on in there? I have seen you people moving in and out of that room, and I know it is my wife and daughter who are there. Please tell me what is happening.” Mame Pokua’s husband pleaded anxiously. “Please, be calm. We can’t give you any details until the doctor comes. He is the right person to brief you on what is happening.” Said the nurse as she quickly went away. Mame Pokua’s husband was confused and scared at the same time. “What is happening!!!? He said as he held his head with his two hands and sat on the chair behind him in anxiousness.
In less than a minute, the Doctor rushed into the hospital. He quickly went to the intensive care unit to know what the problem was. Mame Pokua’s husband got up and tried to question the doctor when he saw the doctor approaching. But, the doctor didn’t want to have any of it. He was not in the mood as he brushed him aside gently and continued his journey into the intensive care Unit.
When the doctor got to the intensive care unit, he saw Mame Pokua grasping for air. She couldn’t breathe and her pulse was becoming abnormal. “Nurse!!! Where are you?” The doctor shouted. “I am here doctor.” Answered one of the nurse’s. “Why haven’t you given the woman any oxygen? Can’t you see she can’t breathe on her own?” The doctor asked angrily. “We tried to give her oxygen when her condition worsened, but the machine went off in five minutes. We checked and realized the oxygen in it was finished. We have searched the whole hospital for oxygen, but all to no avail. We have called for one to be sent here immediately. As it stands now, we are waiting for it.” The nurse replied. “What!!! How can you allow the oxygen to get finished? It is your duty to check all those things. Now, we are losing a patient and our hands are tied!” The doctor said angrily.
Mame Pokua was struggling with the messenger of death. Her daughter was recovering from the surgery, but she was in a critical condition. She continued to grasp for air. She was in abundance, but yet still couldn’t grab any. She was in abundance of air, but her organs couldn’t make use of the available oxygen. In twenty minutes, Mame Pokua was losing consciousness. The pupils on her eyes couldn’t be seen anymore as her body stiffened. The doctor moved in and tried his best to give her first aid before the oxygen arrives. The oxygen was just five minutes away from reaching the hospital.
He tried his best and did all he could, but all to no avail. Mame Pokua was lying lifeless on the hospital bed. There was no heartbeat and her body had become cold. The doctor watched in sadness as he covered Mame Pokua’s body with a white cloth.
The doctor slowly stepped outside. “Doctor tell me what the problem is?” Mame Pokua’s husband asked in a haste when he saw the doctor approaching him. “Please Sir, let us go into my office to have a discussion.” The doctor implored. “No! We will have the discussion here and now. What is it?” Mame Pokua’s husband asked again, but this time with impatience. “Hmm… Sir, your daughter is okay, but I am sorry to inform you we lost your wife.” The doctor finally said, bowing his head down. “What!! What do you mean!!!? What are you saying!!? That my wife is dead!!!? I can’t believe this!” He said as he grabbed the doctor by his coat and broke down into tears. The other family members heard the news and started wailing and mourning for Mame Pokua.
Meanwhile, Daniel was in his house scheming. He needed to act fast and swift and there was no time for any delay. He had gotten all the information he needed and had to move into action. He called Rose to set his plans in motion.
Daniel: Hello Rose. Hope you are doing okay?
Rose: Yes, I am okay. Hope you are fine too?
Daniel: Hmm… I wish I can say that dear. I have encountered a problem.
Rose: Really? What problem?
Daniel: The containers I told you were on sea arrived yesterday. I went to the port today to clear them, but couldn’t.
Rose: Why couldn’t you?
Daniel: I couldn’t pay the importation duties. You know I spent all my money to import those goods and had little left to clear them. I thought what I had on me would be enough to sort things out, but got the shock of my life when I realized the import tariffs had gone up. I will lose all the goods in my containers if I don’t meet the deadline.
Rose: So?
Daniel: I need you to lend me some money to clear the goods. I will refund the money when I sell the goods. I have a market for the goods already, so your money would be refunded soon.
Rose: So how much are we talking about?
Daniel: I need one million Ghana cedis to add up to what I have. I need to pay other tariffs apart from the import tariffs.
Rose: What!!! How do you expect me to get such an amount for you?
Daniel: Rose. I know you can afford it. Please try to help me or else I am finished. I don’t think you want your future husband to be unemployed.
Rose: Okay, I will see what I can do.
With that, Daniel hung up feeling satisfied with what he had achieved so far. He had lured Rose to believe his lies. He quickly told Juliet and informed him of the new development and asked her to keep an eye on Rose.
Rose went into her savings and realized she had eight hundred thousand Ghana cedis. She needed to get additional two hundred thousand Ghana Cedis to add up to reach the target money. The only solution was to sell over fifty percent of her shares in the company she owned. She wouldn’t have done that initially, but with Daniel’s promise of paying back, she auctioned her shares.
Meanwhile, Juliet had missed Daniel so much. Although she had been hearing from him on the phone, she felt physical contact was equally important. She decided to give Daniel a surprise visit. “How romantic that will be.” She said as she took her bath to prepare to go to Daniel’s place. She quickly dressed up and left for Daniel’s house. But, before going, she placed Nana Akua in charge to monitor Rose’s movements.
When she got to Daniel’s house, she realized the gate was not locked. She opened the gate and entered the compound. She tried opening the door that led to the hall, and it opened effortlessly. “I see, Daniel is around.” She said happily as she entered through the door to the hall. She sat on the sofa when she got to the hall. She realized Daniel was bathing and wanted to wait for him to return.
As she was sitting and enjoying a movie, something caught her attention. She saw a brown envelope on the center table. She got curious and took it up to look at the content inside. To her amazement, she found a passport, a visa and a plane ticket dated the same day in the envelope. “This documents belongs to Daniel! Where is mine? Is he planning to run away and leave me to face the consequences of his actions? Men are wicked!! I will teach this guy a lesson he would never forget in his miserable life.
She left quietly and went back to Rose’s house. She went straight to Rose and spilt the beans. She didn’t care about the consequences as she was very heartbroken. Rose was perplexed. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “How can Daniel do this to me? He wants to dupe me and run away with my money?” She said with an angry tone.
Juliet also named Nana Akua as an accomplice. Rose immediately called her parents and informed them about the situation. They immediately left what they were doing and went to the house.
They also interrogated Juliet and realized she was speaking the truth. They immediately called Nana Akua and questioned her too. She got scared and confessed. She revealed how Daniel approached her with the promise of getting her a new house if she helped him dupe Rose. She also revealed how she received money from Daniel to stage the one hundred thousand dollars in Araba’s bag to get her arrested. “I did that because Sir Daniel told me to help him get rid of her from the house. He said she was impeding his plans.” Nana Akua said amidst crying.
Rose’s father asked Rose to call Daniel and convince him to come over to the house. Rose obeyed and called Daniel. He told him the money he asked for was ready and asked him to come to her house to take it. After calling Daniel, she called Araba to come to the house.
Daniel was very happy. At last, his plans had succeeded. He would take the next available flight out of the country and never to return. He drove as fast as he could to Rose’s house.
Unknown to him, Rose’s parents had called the police, and they were already in the house. When Daniel got to the house, he was surprised to see Juliet, Nana Akua, Rose, Araba and Rose’s parents in the hall. He immediately knew something was amiss. He was offered a seat, and he sat slowly on it as all eyes were on him.
Rose’s father started interrogating Daniel. Daniel wanted to deny the charges, but couldn’t because of the hard evidence against him. Soon, he had no choice than to admit to his crimes. He immediately tried to apologize and asked for mercy. Rose’s father ignored him and called in the police. They immediately came and whisked him away. They also arrested Juliet and Nana Akua. They pleaded for mercy, but all fell on deaf ears.
Rose’s father moved to Araba and apologized for treating her badly. He became remorseful and asked Araba for forgiveness. “Get up Sir, I Have already forgiven you.” Araba said when Rose’s father knelt to ask for her forgiveness. Araba was happy that the truth had finally come to light.
Rose’s parents immediately adopted Araba as their younger daughter and gave her shares in the family’s company. Both Rose and Araba were very happy as they could now refer to themselves as sisters. Araba was now a wealthy girl. The tears of suffering were wiped away from her eyes. She lived happily with her new family.
